Peer support is a form of support where individuals who share a common experience provide emotional and practical support to one another. This type of support is different from professional support because it comes from someone who has been through a similar experience and can understand the challenges and feelings that come with it.

Peer support A form of support where individuals who share a common experience, such as being a caregiver, provide emotional and practical support to one another.   
Peer supporter / helper / provider / mentor An individual who offers support and guidance to another person in a peer support relationship. 
Peer support recipient / help-seeker

An individual who receives support and guidance from another person in a peer support relationship.
*Note, it is not suggested to use the term “mentee” as it can convey a sense of imbalance within the relationship between peers and is typically used in more structured relationships where experienced individuals provide guidance and support to less experienced individuals.

Emotional support

Support that provides comfort, encouragement, and understanding to someone in a difficult or challenging situation.

Practical support

Support that provides practical help and assistance with everyday tasks or problems.

Respite worker An individual who provides temporary care for a person requiring that care. This allows the caregiver to have a break.
