Depending on your life situation and the issues you and your loved one face, you may need to access federal, provincial and/or local programs. Finding your way through the maze of government programs can be confusing. New programs are initiated and old programs are abandoned. Programs—and Ministries—change their names and re-structure. Decision-makers and contacts that you have built relationships with move on.
Advocacy and support groups in your community can help you find and keep track of programs and benefits that can help your loved one manage a chronic disability and can support you as a caregiver. Health care professionals in your loved one’s circle of support may also be good resources for information and referrals to useful programs.
Portals are available on the Internet that link to multiple supports and programs for people with disabilities to consult on a variety of issues. They may help you identify problems and solutions you had not considered.
