Confirmation Bias
Confirmation bias is a tendency to seek and interpret information in a way that confirms pre-existing beliefs or hypotheses. This can lead to a lack of objectivity and critical thinking in the mentoring process. For example, a peer supporter might be more likely to overlook or ignore negative feedback or information that contradicts their assumptions or beliefs about the support recipient's abilities or potential. Confirmation bias can also make it difficult for the peer supporter to adapt their approach to the support recipient's needs and goals, imposing their own perspective and biases. Recognizing and actively working to overcome confirmation bias in mentoring can lead to more effective and impactful mentoring relationships.
