Physical Wellness

Physical wellness refers to the state of being in good physical health. It encompasses many different aspects of a person's physical well-being, including proper nutrition, enough exercise, staying hydrated, and adequate sleep. Think of the acronym NEWS.

Nutrition: Proper nutrition is important for maintaining physical wellness. As a caregiver, you can sometimes lose track of time and miss or skip meals, but food provides our bodies with the nutrients and energy to help with our physical wellness. Eating a balanced diet is important.

Exercise: Regular exercise and fitness help maintain physical wellness. Exercise allows us to improve cardiovascular health, increases muscle strength, and has been shown to improve mental health. Any amount of physical activity that gets your heart beating faster can improve your physical wellness. Some activity is better than none, and it is better to find something you enjoy.

Water: Staying hydrated is another key component for maintaining physical wellness. The body needs water to function properly; it helps to regulate body temperature, remove waste, and transport nutrients. Like sleep, individual hydration needs vary from person to person. The additional resources section links the Canadian government's tips for assessing and maintaining your hydration level.

Sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for maintaining physical wellness. While the amount of sleep required varies from person to person, experts suggest you aim for at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night. A regular sleep schedule and a quiet, dark, and cool environment can help improve your sleep quality.

Incorporating these elements of physical wellness into your daily routine can improve your overall physical health and well-being. By taking care of your physical health, you may find yourself better equipped to take care of others, like putting on your oxygen mask before assisting someone else on an airplane.
