A Caregiver's Journey (Video)

One aspect of ASD is the importance of routine. The need for familiarity can make areas of life such as family vacations challenging. The following video shares with you the story of Charlene and how she prepared for a family holiday that would meet the needs of her autistic son while ensuring that the rest of the family also had everything they needed to have a great time. The trip was full of moments, such as an earthquake, that would challenge even the most seasoned traveler. Charlene's story highlights how preparation and positivity can make the most challenging situations not only a success but an opportunity to make wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.

These reflection questions do not require you to provide an answer. They are intended for personal reflection and are to be used to enhance your knowledge and understanding of ASD.

  1. Which part of Charlene's story resonated with you the most?

  2. As you have seen in the video, families of children with ASD need to approach everyday situations with an awareness of how change may impact the individual with ASD. How do you see yourself providing support to these families and navigators?
